How To Set Your Dance Goals

With 2026 right around the corner, now is a great time to self-reflect and plan out goals for the year ahead. Setting goals helps you stay focused and motivated about your dance journey. This guide will walk you through how to set and stick to your goals!

One helpful way to set goals is by using the SMART Method. Let’s break it down below:

S- Specific

A goal like “I want to be a better ballet dancer" sounds nice, but what does “better” really mean? Everyone defines “better” differently, so the goal needs to be clear.

Ask yourself: What specifically do you want to improve?

Here are some examples of specific goals:

  • I want to land a double pirouette consistently.”
  • “I want to improve my stamina during petite allegro.
  • “I want to increase my strength and flexibility for higher extensions.
The more specific your goal is, the easier it will be to work toward.

M- Measurable

Next, think about how you will track your progress. Measuring your growth helps you track your progress to see how far you’ve come, and keeps you motivated.

Here are some examples of how you can track your goals:

  • Record yourself doing pirouettes to visually see what might need improvement.
  • Track how much time you spend jogging or doing cardio.
  • Create a stretch log for yourself, and mark each time you have completed a session.
When you see your progress, your work feels even more rewarding.

A- Attainable and R - Realistic

Now it’s time to pause and reflect. Your goals should challenge you, but should also be something that is possible.

Check in by asking yourself these questions:

  • Have you mastered a single pirouette before aiming to do a double?
  • Do you have time in your schedule to begin cardio training?
  • Can you commit to brief stretching sessions multiple times a week?
Be honest with yourself and your schedule, to help set goals you can truly achieve.

T- Time Frame

Last but not least, decide when you want to reach your goal. Setting a time frame helps drive your focus and keeps you organized.

You might choose a timeline like:

  • 3 months
  • 6 months
  • 1 year
Choose a time frame that fits your schedule and keeps you driven.

One of the biggest takeaways when goal setting is remembering to stay flexible. School, activities, and life can get busy. It’s important to remember that’s okay! If it takes longer than planned to reach your goal, don’t give up.

There is no right or wrong timeline. What matters most is that your passion and intention are still there. If you need to adjust your goals, simply go back through the SMART Method and reset your focus. You’ve got this!
